General FAQs
1. Are you a “No-kill Shelter” and what does that mean?
This means that we find homes for all healthy, adoptable animals — those that are not severely ill (untreatable).

We have several Feral Cat Programs; including altering feral cats and feeding local colonies.

Keep in mind that due to space constraints, we sometimes have to turn animals away. These animals may wind up at Animal Control or other shelters.

2. Are you funded by the State or Federal Government? Where do your funds come from?
No, we do not receive any funding from any government. Our funds come The Ark Thrift Store, donations made by individuals, grants, fundraising events and bequests.

3. Do you sell animals to labs for research?
Absolutely not. In fact the shelter was founded in 1986 by a group of concerned citizens in response to the county’s policy of seizure, which is the selling of animals for laboratory use. Happily, that policy ended in the mid-90s, but MCHS continues on, finding homes for more than 500 animals a year.

4. Is MCHS part of the county’s Animal Control?
No, we are a non-profit No-Kill Shelter. we do not receive any funding from any government

5. What does Animal Control do?
When Animal Control gets an animal, they determine whether the animal is a stray or owned. If possible, they return the animal to their owners.  If they are strays or unwanted, they adopt out as many as they can. They also work with the MCHS and other animal organizations to place these animals. Their phone number is 964-2718.

Other services offered by the County’s Animal Control are:
Rabies control
Licensing of dogs in the County
Complaints from citizens against animals (excessive barking, biting, leash law violations, etc.) and their owners
Humane cases (abuse of animals)

6. Where do you get your dogs and cats?
Animal Control and other shelters and rescues
Owner surrender
Strays
Drop-offs (literally left at our back door)

7. What if an animal is sick?
We have a Staff Veterinarian who examines every animal and prescribes the necessary medications. That animal is then moved to our isolation room and given medication as required. When they are well, they are moved back into the general population and made available for adoption.

8. What if I take an animal and it doesn’t fit into my family; can I bring it back?  And, do I get my money back?
Yes, you can bring it back. The adoption fee is non-refundable as it goes to the care of the animal (food, shelter, etc.).

9. I thought I could get an animal for free from you.  Can I?
We are unable to give animals away. Yes, we are a non-profit, but we do have expenses to cover. The adoption fee we charge does not even begin to cover our costs for food, rent, medicines, vet care, litter, etc. Without the donations from individuals and grants we would be unable to stay in business.

For more information on where the money - go to Cat FAQ 1 & Cat FAQ 2 and Dog FAQ 1 & Dog FAQ 2. These tell you what tests we do and what vaccinations we give to all cats and dogs in our care.
