Cats and Small Animals Almost all cats are predators and almost never learn to accept a small animal, snake, bird or fish without thinking of “lunch”. An aquarium can be very entertaining to a cat, but if a fish disappears, I would ensure your aquarium has a secure top. Cats may dislike water, but the fun of the hunt may overwhelm their fears.
Nature is natural Cats love a hunt and love a chase. Throw your cat a small catnip toy or fur mouse and watch it toss, throw and roll with glee. It is a fun game and you must ensure your other small animals, birds and reptiles are located in secure cages and never allowed to interact, even when you are in attendance.
Hamsters, Gerbils & other Furry Animals These are the most attractive for any cat. There are numerous types of cages for these animals, but make sure they are very secure. A curious cat can be very creative. When you return home, you may find a very innocent cat and an open door to a cage or a cage knocked onto the floor. Cats (particularly mother cats with kittens) have been known to prey on rabbits, so do not assume size will eliminate the problem.
Snakes Snakes are both the hunted and hunters. Large snakes have been known to eat cats and small dogs.
Birds Bird cages must be kept in secure cages, high off the ground. Even then, a young adult cat may be able to make a 5 foot plus jump and swing from a bird cage.
